Eastern University's Jon Nazon scored his first goal of the season on a free kick in Saturday's win.
ST. DAVIDS, Pa.—Eastern University Men’s Soccer shut out the Neumann University Knights 2-0 in a rain-soaked battle on Olson Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles improved to 4-1 on the season and did so with just 10 men on the field for the game’s final 35 minutes.
Eastern’s Jon Nazon gave Eastern the 1-0 lead after 40 minutes of the teams looking to gain an advantage in the midfield. Eastern’s Eric Giovagnoli drew a foul just outside of the box on the left wing. Nazon stepped up to take a free kick, and for the second time this season, the Eagles scored on a low bouncing free kick from the left of the box. Nazon’s shot skipped in between Neumann goalkeeper Dan Jones and the near post for his first goal this season.
The Eagles carried the 1-0 lead into the locker room, but 10 minutes into the second half, the Eagles lost Josh Cirocco for the rest of the match. Cirocco and Jones collided while going for a through ball at least 25 yards from the goal, and Cirocco was given a straight red card.
Eastern trudged on down a man and worked to keep the game under control at their pace. At the end of the 86th minute, Eric Giovagnoli put the game away with his fourth goal of the year. Hunter Rosenberg found Giovagnoli with a through-ball after megging his defender down the sideline. Giovagnoli made sure he stayed onside until Rosenberg released the pass and then turned on the afterburners and sprinted past the Neumann backline to the ball. Giovagnoli drew out the keeper and finished far post.
Nick Policastro, Eastern senior goalkeeper, earned his first clean sheet of the season. He made one save, a diving stop on a short-range free kick in the first half.
