Game 5: Eastern v. Haverford College

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern Men's Soccer scored twice in the second half Wednesday against Haverford College to secure a 2-0 shutout win.

The Eagles improved to 4-1-1 this season while the Fords fell to 3-4.

Eastern freshman Ben Hriscu, who leads the Eagles is goals scored this season, scored his sixth goal in as many games, while Eastern sophomore defender Jair Saenz netted his second career goal, first this season.

After 62 minutes of scoreless play, Saenz stepped up to midfield to take a free kick. With the low afternoon sun shining towards Haverford goalie Nick Kahn, Eastern coach Mark Wagner told Saenz to loft a high ball right at the keeper. Saenz crossed midfield and placed the ball over Kahn's outstretched hands, off the bottom of the crossbar, and into the net.

Eastern added its second goal in the 79th minute. Eastern striker Brandon Beaumont hunted down a ball about 30 yards out, won it from a defender and found Ben Barnhardt. Barnhardt touched the ball to a cutting Hriscu who juked his defender and challenged Haverford goalie Andriy Mshanetskyy one-on-one. Hriscu promptly finished the ball in the back right corner of the goal. Coach Wagner said that he had challenged Beaumont to step up the pressure at striker. "Beaumont created the second goal," Wagner said. "It was a great finish, but Beaumont's pressure made that happen."

After a lackluster first half for the Eagles, Coach Wagner said he saw considerable improvement in the second half. Wagner challenged the Eagles to win more free balls and improve ball movement in the second half. Wagner said in the first half, Haverford won 33 "50/50" balls compared to Eastern winning 18. In the second half, Eastern secured 30 of those compared to Haverford's 21.

Eastern also outshot Haverford 13-6 in the second half, and 19-11 in the game.

With the 2-0 win, the Eagles have earned their third 2-0 shutout this season with Kyle Nichols in goal.

Eastern travels to Centenary College Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest.
