ANNVILLE, Pa.—Eastern Men’s Soccer was named as the team to beat in the Freedom Conference according to the conference preseason coaches’ poll released on Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagles, who finished 2013 with a 14-4-1 record, had the best conference record at the end of the regular season (5-1-1). The Eagles also claimed coach of the year (Mark Wagner), player of the year (Eric Giovagnoli) and rookie of the year honors (Joe Centeno). Additionally, eight Eagles were named to the All-Freedom Conference teams.
After a first-round exit in the Freedom Conference postseason last year, the Eagles are looking to return to the playoffs, vie for the conference championship, and maintain a high ranking in the NSCAA regional rankings. Eastern will have to do that without rookie of the year Joe Centeno and All-Freedom defender Brandon Reichart who helped Eastern’s defense record 12 shutouts.
The Eagles have brought in another large recruiting class with nine freshmen. On Aug. 29, the Eagles will take the field for the first time at Rosemont College for a 6 p.m. showdown on the gray turf.
Eastern will play its home opener against neighboring Cabrini College on Sept. 6 at 3:30 p.m.
