CAMDEN, N.J.--Eastern University Men's Soccer dropped its Wednesday evening road match to Rutgers-Camden, the No. 6 team in the country.
The Eagles (2-1-1) fell behind early to the undefeated
Rutgers-Camden Raptors (5-0-0), and ended up losing 3-2.
The Raptors' C.J. Finley scored 1:24 into the game, with what
Eastern coach Mark Wagner called an unbelievable shot weak side into the upper
ninety.
Coach Wagner commented on the difficulty of playing down a goal that
early to a team as good as Rutgers-Camden. He said the Eagles had to play very
aggressive to try to battle back, making them susceptible to counter-attacks.
Eagles goalie Kyle Nichols was kept busy at the net, as
Rutgers-Camden shot 19 times, 12 on goal.
Eastern placed six shots on goal, battling back to tie the game at
1-1 in the 24th minute. Eric Giovagnoli scored the goal, his second of the year,
with a header into the net.
The Raptors, however regained the lead in the 36th minute after
Stevan Austino finished a poor Eastern clear in front of the net. The Raptors
increased the lead to 3-1 in the 54th minute with Mike Ryan's fifth goal of the
year.
Eastern earned one back right before the final whistle as Ben Hriscu
scored his second goal of the year.
The Eagles return home to take on neighboring rival Cabrini College
at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
